All training is delivered by NPORS-accredited instructors, ensuring that all lifting operations using excavators are planned, executed, and supervised safely and efficiently.
This course is suitable for existing excavator operators who wish to extend their competence to include lifting operations using their machine.
Course Content
Delegates will learn to:
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in lifting operations
- Identify and comply with relevant health and safety legislation, including LOLER, PUWER, and BS 7121
- Identify the safe working limits of the excavator when used for lifting purposes
- Understand rated capacity indicators (RCI) and rated capacity limiters (RCL)
- Conduct excavator pre-use checks and lifting equipment inspections
- Correctly attach, test, and use lifting accessories, slings, and hooks
- Perform lifting, travelling, and placing operations safely and smoothly
- Understand how radius, load weight, and machine configuration affect stability
- Communicate clearly using recognised hand and radio signals
- Recognise unsafe conditions and take appropriate corrective actions
- Shut down and secure the excavator safely following lifting operations

Course Duration
- Experienced Excavator Operators: Typically, 1 day
- Novice (when combined with N202 training): Add 1 additional day for lifting operations competency
Duration may vary depending on previous experience and training requirements.
Assessment
Delegates will be assessed through:
- A theory test (verbal or written) to confirm understanding of legislation and lifting principles
- A practical assessment, demonstrating safe and competent operation during lifting tasks using an excavator
Successful participants will be issued an NPORS Operator Card for N100 – Excavator as a Crane.
Entry Requirements
Delegates must hold an NPORS N202 Excavator 360 qualification or possess equivalent excavator operating experience
Must be 18 years or older
Must be medically fit to participate in lifting operations
A good level of spoken and written English is required
This course can also be delivered by one of our instructors that speak Russian, Polish, or Lithuanian.
Certification
Successful delegates will receive an NPORS Operator Card (N100 – Excavator as a Crane), valid for 5 years from the date of issue or 2 years if they require to have CSCS logo.
