About the IPAF MEWP Categories
Our IPAF Training Courses cover the following categories:
- 3A – Mobile Vertical: Scissor lifts and vertical lifts.
- 3B – Mobile Boom: Self‑propelled booms or cherry pickers.
- 1B – Static Boom: Vehicle‑mounted booms, spider lifts, or trailer‑mounted MEWPs.

Course Content
Delegates will learn to:
- Understand relevant health and safety regulations including WAHR 2005, PUWER 1998, and MHSWR 1999.
- Identify different MEWP types and their intended use.
- Conduct pre‑use inspections and daily checks.
- Operate the MEWP safely, including drive, elevation, descent, and emergency controls.
- Assess the ground, overhead hazards, and environmental conditions.
- Correctly position and stabilise the MEWP for safe lifting.
- Understand load limits, outriggers, and levelling systems.
- Use safety harnesses and other PPE correctly.
- Execute emergency rescue procedures safely.
- Shut down and safely isolate MEWP equipment after use.

- A theory assessment (online or written) on safety, legislation, and hazard awareness.
- A practical assessment demonstrating safe use of MEWP(s).
Upon successful completion, delegates will receive a digital IPAF PAL (Powered Access Licence) Card and certificate, valid for 5 years, verifying competence in the selected category or categories (3A, 3B, 1B, PAV).
