This course provides delegates with the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills to operate a side loader forklift truck safely, efficiently, and in compliance with current Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines and PUWER regulations.
A side loader is designed for handling long or cumbersome loads such as timber, piping, and steel sections, particularly in confined spaces — making this course ideal for operators in sectors such as construction, logistics, warehousing, and manufacturing.
Training is conducted by accredited instructors, ensuring a high standard of safety and operational competence.
Course Content
Delegates will learn to:
- Understand the operator’s roles, responsibilities, and legal requirements
- Identify and describe key components, controls, and functions of a side loader
- Carry out pre-use and operational safety checks according to manufacturer’s guidelines
- Assess loads, weight limits, and stability principles
- Operate the side loader safely in forward, reverse, and confined spaces
- Handle long and awkward loads safely and efficiently
- Load and unload vehicles or storage areas correctly
- Maintain good visibility and control while operating around other personnel and plant
- Recognise and manage potential site hazards
- Shut down, secure, and park the machine safely after use
Assessment
Each participant will complete:
- A theoretical test (verbal or written) covering safety and operational knowledge
- A practical assessment demonstrating competence in operating the side loader
Upon successful completion, operators will be awarded with a BRITTOp accredited Operator Card and certificate for– Side Loader.
Course Duration
- Novice Operator: Typically, 3 to 5 days
- Experienced Operator / Refresher: 1 to 2 days
Duration may vary depending on the delegate’s experience and group size.
Entry Requirements
- Candidates must be 18 years or older.
- A good level of spoken and written English is essential.
- Participants must be medically fit to operate lifting equipment safely.
- This course can also be delivered by one of our instructors that speak Russian, Polish, or Lithuanian.
Certification
Delegates who successfully complete theory and practical assessments will receive a BRITTOp accredited Operator Card and certificate (Side Loader), valid for 3-5 years from the date of issue.
