This course provides delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely locate underground services using a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny) prior to excavation or ground disturbance work.

Our NPORS-accredited instructors ensure training meets current Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidance and HSG47 – Avoiding danger from underground services, helping to reduce the risk of costly and dangerous service strikes.

This course is ideal for groundworkers, utility operatives, engineers, supervisors, and anyone involved in excavation-based projects.

Course Content

Delegates will learn to:

  • Understand the relevant health and safety legislation, including HSG47
  • Explain the dangers of underground utilities such as electric cables, gas, water, and telecoms
  • Identify the different components and functions of the CAT and Genny
  • Conduct pre-use checks and calibration procedures on detection equipment
  • Operate CAT and Genny tools in various modes to accurately locate services
  • Interpret detection signals and dependability of readings
  • Use search patterns effectively to survey excavation areas
  • Mark identified utilities clearly and safely in accordance with site procedures
  • Understand common sources of error and how to avoid false readings
  • Apply safe excavation practices in conjunction with detection techniques

Training can be delivered at:

Your premises or worksite: Using your own CAT & Genny equipment (subject to safety and suitability checks).

MV and Sons Training Services Ltd provides NPORS-accredited training throughout the UK, with main operational areas in London, Essex, Suffolk, and Norfolk.

Course Duration

Novice Operators: 1 day

Experienced Operators / Refresher: Half day to 1 day

Duration depends on experience level and number of delegates.

Assessment

Delegates are assessed through:

A theoretical test (written or verbal) covering safe working practices and detection principles

A practical assessment demonstrating correct use of CAT and Genny equipment

On successful completion, delegates will receive an NPORS Operator Card for N304 – Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT & Genny).

Entry Requirements

Delegates must be 18 years or older.

A good understanding of spoken and written English is required.

Participants should be medically fit to take part in training activities.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the assessments, delegates will be awarded an NPORS Operator Card (N304 – Cable Avoidance Tools / CAT & Genny), valid for 5 years from the date of issue or 2 years if they require to have CSCS logo.
