Course Content
Delegates will learn to:
- Understand the legal responsibilities and duties of a compact crane operator
- Identify key crane components, functions, and safety systems
- Conduct pre-use inspections and safety checks in line with manufacturer recommendations
- Understand lifting principles, load charts, and rated capacity indicators (RCIs)
- Assess ground conditions and set up the crane safely within its working limits
- Select and use the correct lifting accessories and attachments
- Safely lift, move, and position loads using appropriate signals and communication
- Operate the crane safely in restricted and confined spaces
- Recognise and respond to potential hazards during lifting operations
- Shut down, isolate, and secure the crane safely after work

Course Duration
Novice Operator: Typically, 2 to 3 days
Experienced Operator / Refresher: 1 day

Assessment
Each participant is assessed through:
A theory test (verbal or written) covering safety, regulations, and operational knowledge
A practical assessment demonstrating safe and competent operation of a compact crane
Successful delegates will be issued an NPORS Operator Card for N140 – Compact Crane.
Entry Requirements
Delegates must be 18 years or older.
A good level of spoken and written English is required.
Candidates should be medically fit to operate lifting machinery safely.
Certification
Delegates who successfully complete both theory and practical assessments will receive an NPORS Operator Card (N140 – Compact Crane), valid for 5 years from the date of issue or 2 years if they require to have CSCS logo.
